Rede, Collaboration with David Chipperfield

For SARGADELOS, it is always a source of satisfaction to present new projects , since it is the moment in which we bring to light the fruit of numerous days of work and development and in which all our concerns and efforts are reflected in order to develop products in line with our brand philosophy and that honor our legacy.

Our history has always been linked to collaborations with renowned artists and designers , from Galician and Spanish creators such as Souto, Colmeiro, Castelao, Maside, Laxeiro, Acisclo Manzano, Caruncho, X. Quessada, Francisco Leiro, Antonio Murado, Ailanto, Pepa Poch or Gloria García Lorca; to international figures such as Eddy Varekamp or Norman Trapman. On this occasion we can say that it is a great pride for us to present "El Conjunto REDE" , a new project by the distinguished London architect David Chipperfield , unanimously recognized as one of the most prestigious figures in contemporary architecture .

This important and significant collaboration represents a turning point in its already relevant career: that a world celebrity should choose a Galician company to reproduce some of its ideas or designs in ceramics means, for those of us who work at the company, recognition of our work and our history.

This collaboration is born above all from the deep affection that David professes for Galicia , a relationship that arose more than 30 years ago when he and his family decided to spend their summer holidays in Corrubedo , and where they have since established their second residence.

"I love the directness of Galicia; everything is what it is, both the good and the bad. It's not packaged or presented; it's very raw, exposed, and very direct. Like the food, there are no fantasies or aspirations. It's a place where life has been hard and that has shaped people's respect for the land and the sea. Coming from London, where our lives are very much shaped by the excesses of choice and consumerism, Galicia is refreshingly direct and uncomplicated."

«The opportunity to work with Sargadelos is an opportunity to work with the company's extraordinary craftsmanship and techniques and to exploit these potentials and that of the molding and firing process itself. The relief motif I chose was based on several references, obviously the idea of the fishing net , but also an allusion to traditional Japanese ceramic decoration. Perhaps most importantly, the idea of a pattern that appears tactile and can extend over the form, creating a concept not only of surface but also of structure

The pieces in the "REDE Set" are formally and aesthetically related to the tradition of relief tableware developed at the Castro de Samoedo factory in Sada. Decorated pieces such as Portomarinico, Cuncha, Peixes, and F-73 share many elements in common with this new creation.

This collection uses an external geometric grid as its main construction element. Inspired by traditional fishing nets , this grid varies slightly in morphology to adapt to the different volumetric surfaces to which it is applied. In this way, it tenses and stretches in the larger dimensions and loosens and relaxes when covering smaller diameters and curves. These variations in the geometry of the modules give the pieces great dynamism and enhance their volumes .

The project development process took place over almost a year, with continuous communication between Sargadelos and David Chipperfield himself, with numerous factory visits and constant supervision of the different processes. It was undoubtedly a great productive challenge, and its development combined current techniques such as modeling , prototyping , and 3D printing with other more traditional and more manual processes such as carving or plaster die-cutting . We believe the effort was worth it, as we are extremely satisfied with the result. For us, it has been an honor and a great source of learning to have developed this set of pieces with the help of a world-renowned architect such as David Chipperfield .

The “REDE Set” is made up of seven pieces : A glass/cup , a tall bowl , a low bowl , two plates , one large 24.5 cm and a smaller 18 cm, a salad bowl and a spherical vase , the shape of the latter being a direct nod to the old glass buoys covered in netting that inspired the relief. It is available in four colours : the pure white of porcelain, the traditional cobalt blue of s, a tile pink present in many of our sets and a not so common mustard yellow . It will be sold in individual pieces so that each customer can put together their own set. 3 closed packs with one piece in each colour will also be offered: 4 Glasses/Cups , 4 tall bowls or 4 low bowls . The entire collection will be available at Sargadelos physical points of sale as well as in our Online store .
